Erica Nix’s passion for people and communities drew her to photography. She studied photography at St. Edwards University, where the candid, documentary style of Diane Arbus and Robert Frank inspired her, and has been a professional photographer for the 10 years since. She has exhibited in several Texas galleries, taught photography to at-risk youth and has worked as a wedding photographer for over 8 years.
As befits a wedding photographer, Erica is energetic, vibrant and a natural at bringing out the joy in any situation, but is comfortable as a fly on the wall too, moving into the background during intimate moments – while never failing to capture them! Erica has spent the past two years working with Whitney Lee Photography, and this year found her true calling through her own venture – Austin Queer Weddings.
As a queer Texan, Austin Queer Weddings is more than a hobby for Erica. Even though all weddings have some family drama, marriage can be especially complex for people in the queer community, and Erica identifies with the difficulties that come with being LGBTQ. But as Erica has found, queer weddings are inspiring, heart warming and fun. The struggle for equality in Texas is replete with obstacles and disappointments – but also hope – and Erica is committed to making equality go viral through Queer Austin Weddings, in partnership with @iAmEquality.
